The Traveling Vocations Chalice Program has been efficacious in fostering new vocations, especially to the priesthood and consecrated life. The purpose of the program is to encourage families to pray for and promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The consecrated chalice serves as a tangible reminder of this special intention for the Church.
The Second Vatican Council highlights the responsibility of the laity to pray for and support vocations—a call that has been strongly affirmed in the writings and addresses of both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Praying for vocations is the most powerful way to support them. A vocation is a call from the Holy Spirit, a gift from God that is nurtured through prayer. When we pray for vocations, we lift up to our Father those men and women whom He is calling to follow Him in a special way. We hope that those who bring the chalice home will continue to pray daily for vocations.
How the Program Works
At the end of Mass, a volunteer family is called forward by the priest to receive the chalice case and a blessing. (The case contains a consecrated chalice, a prayer booklet, and a journal for family members to share their experiences.)
The family takes the chalice home and places it in a place of honor.
For two weeks, the family prays daily during their prayer time for an increase and perseverance of vocations.
