What DOES Count as Service Hours

• Volunteering at the parish, school, or a community organization
• Helping at a food pantry, soup kitchen, clothing drive, or shelter
• Serving at a parish event when you are there specifically as a volunteer
• Helping with younger children at Vacation Bible School, Faith Formation, or another organized program
• Visiting or assisting residents at a nursing home or senior center
• Participating in an organized neighborhood or park clean-up
• Helping with a charitable collection, donation drive, or fundraising event
• Volunteering at an animal shelter or rescue organization
• Raking leaves, shoveling snow, doing yard work, or other chores for an elderly, disabled, or otherwise needy neighbor without being paid
• Helping someone outside your household who genuinely needs assistance, without expecting anything in return
• Serving with an approved nonprofit or community service project
• Helping prepare, organize, set up, clean up, or serve at an event when you are volunteering rather than simply attending

What Does NOT Count as Service Hours

• Anything you are paid to do, including babysitting, lawn mowing, pet sitting, tutoring, or working at a job
• Regular household chores such as dishes, laundry, cleaning your room, taking out the garbage, or helping with yard work
• Things your parents or guardians ask you to do as part of being a member of your household
• Babysitting your own siblings or routinely helping care for them
• Doing homework or helping with a normal classroom assignment
• Attending Mass, Faith Formation, Confirmation class, a retreat, youth group, or another required activity
• Participating in a sports practice, game, club, concert, or other extracurricular activity
• Donating money, food, clothing, or other items — the donation is generous, but it is not a service hour
• Helping a friend with something that is simply part of friendship, such as helping with homework or hanging out with a younger sibling
• Time spent traveling to and from a service activity
• Something you would normally be expected to do anyway

Ask yourself, “Am I freely giving my time and effort to help someone else, without being paid and beyond what I am normally responsible for doing?” If yes, it probably qualifies as service.

Service hours and Acts of Discipleship are not the same thing. Praying a Rosary for someone, attending a Holy Hour, or praying at a cemetery can be excellent Acts of Discipleship, but they would not ordinarily count toward service hours because the purpose of the service requirement is active service to others
